KLIA aerotrain halted for an hour: drainage pump fault, water build-up in tunnel amidst heavy rain – MAHB

We’re sure your social media feeds are full of KLIA aerotrain breakdown stuff, but here comes official word. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has confirmed that the aerotrain was suspended for an hour due to heavy rain causing water accumulation in the tunnel, reports the New Straits Times.

MAHB said in a statement that there was a technical fault in one of the drainage pumps during the downpour at 11am, which stopped the automatic removal of water.

“The tunnel’s drainage system includes pumps designed to manage water ingress during severe weather conditions. As a safety precaution, train operations were suspended until the water was manually cleared and the tracks were confirmed safe for use.

“Service resumed at 12.15pm after clearance was obtained from the technical and safety teams,” the statement said, adding that the pump system is currently being rectified to ensure optimal future performance in adverse weather.

“Our technical teams continue to monitor the aerotrain system closely during these early stages of operation to ensure that any necessary adjustments are promptly addressed. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we fine-tune this new system,” said MAHB.

The KLIA aerotrain resumed operations on July 1 following a RM456 million upgrade exercise as part of a RM742 million transformation initiative by MAHB, after having been out of action since March 2023. Flight passengers have been bussing between the main and satellite buildings for two years. The new Alstom Innovia APM 300R trains do the one-kilometre journey in under three minutes.
